I am a late bloomer to the world of creative arts. After a 35+ year career in state government, I decided to expand my horizons and create the art that I have always loved so much. As a result of my efforts, I have been fortunate to have placed first in the 2008 California State Fair creative arts sculpture category and first in the 2008 KVIE Art Auction sculpture category.
I absolutely love playing with the clay. There is no deep meaning, rhyme or reason to my works, other than the joy and fun I get from creating them. My sculptures are whimsical and figurative. Along with the creative enjoyment, I also get a big kick out of my family saying “Wow, YOU made that?” Yes, I did.
In 2005, I began by taking pottery-throwing lessons at Alpha Fired Arts, a local ceramics studio. I noticed that the sculptors on the other side of the room seemed to be having more fun, so I joined them. Working in a shared studio is part of the enjoyment for me. There’s a shared spirit and camaraderie among us. We work off of the shared energy and creativity.
I’m currently taking classes at American River College, with the intention of transferring to Sacramento State University to complete my undergraduate degree in Art. Currently, I attend a weekly sculpture class under the instruction of Tony Natsoulas.
I absolutely love working in a group environment rather than alone. It’s not all about the art itself, but thriving in an environment of creative artists. An extension of my creative adventure has been teaching a clay class at the Sacramento Food Bank, Women’s Wisdom Project – literally, I get to learn and teach at the same time.
